Black Women and DV/IPV in Delaware
In Delaware, Black women are disproportionately affected by domestic violence and intimate partner violence (DV/IPV), with data showing that they are more likely to experience abuse compared to women of other racial/ethnic groups.
Black women experience domestic violence at a rate of 35% higher than white women, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.
Systemic racism plays a significant role in exacerbating the vulnerability of Black women to DV/IPV, as factors such as limited access to resources, lack of economic opportunities, and discrimination within the criminal justice system contribute to their heightened risk of experiencing abuse.
Studies have shown that Black women face unique barriers when seeking help for DV/IPV, such as distrust of law enforcement and social services, fear of retaliation from their abusers, and lack of culturally competent support services.
Despite these challenges, it is important to recognize the resilience of Black women in Delaware who are survivors of DV/IPV, and to work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable system that prioritizes their safety and well-being.
