Black Mamas Bail Fund
Free Our Mamas. Reunite Our Families.
The Black Mamas Bail Fund is a collective effort led by Black Mothers In Power (BMIP), in partnership with Wilmington Freedom Alliance (WFA) and A Woman’s Worth Project (AWWP). Together, we are fighting to free Black pregnant people, mothers, caregivers, and Transgender individuals who are jailed simply because they can’t afford bail.
We believe no one should be behind bars for being poor. Our work is about liberation, justice, and keeping our families together.
What’s a Bail Fund?
A bail fund helps people who can’t afford to buy their freedom. When someone is arrested, they’re often forced to sit in jail until their trial - unless they can pay bail.
If you’re wealthy, you go home. If you’re not, you stay in. That’s the injustice.
Our fund pays full bail - no interest, no repayment, no judgment - so our loved ones can come home.
Why This Work Matters
The cash bail system was never built for us. It punishes people for being poor and criminalizes care.
Black families feel this harm the hardest:
44% of women in jail are Black
Most are single mothers or caregivers
Black trans folks face even greater risk and violence behind bars
Jail time, even a few days, can destroy lives - costing jobs, housing, and even custody. We’re here to stop that cycle.
When We Bail Out
We raise funds year-round, with a special push around Mother’s Day to bring our loved ones home. 100% of donations go to bail. No overhead. No salaries. Just freedom.
Need Support?
If you or someone you know is a Black pregnant person, mother, caregiver, or Trans individual in jail for a low-level offense, you can apply for bail support.
Fill out our request form to be considered. While we can’t guarantee assistance, we’ll do all we can.
Donate Now - Help Bring Black Mamas Home
Freedom shouldn't come with a price tag.
Your donation goes directly toward posting bail for someone’s mama, someone’s child, someone’s caregiver.
Every dollar makes a difference. Every bail out is an act of resistance.
Participatory Defense: Protecting Black Mothers and Families in Delaware
Black Mothers In Power is part of the National Participatory Defense Network - a nationwide movement led by families fighting for justice.
We hold meetings in Delaware to support Black mothers, caregivers, and youth facing charges. We help families understand the court system, build powerful defense campaigns, and push for real change.
As a trained and trusted hub in the network, we stand with communities across the country working to transform the legal system - starting with the people most impacted.
This is community defense. This is how we fight back.
