Black Mothers In Power is a grassroots organization committed to addressing and rectifying the systemic inequities Black mothers and their children face in America today. Through policy advocacy, training, and community programming, we strive to challenge stigmatized beliefs, dismantle systemic barriers, and promote equitable outcomes in Black maternal health.
Our mission is to raise awareness of racial health disparities affecting Black women and children through grassroots organizing and programming. Our vision is an equitable society where Black birthing persons have agency and autonomy over their reproductive health and parenting decisions.
Community Outreach Worker: $15 an hour entry level position through the National Health Corp
Position Overview
The Community Outreach Worker will play a vital role in connecting BMIP with the community, partners, and stakeholders. This is a primarily in-person position based at the BMIP Center, where the Outreach Worker will engage directly with community members, facilitate programming, and support day-to-day operations of the center.
Key Responsibilities
1. BMIP Center Support & Management
Assist with the daily operations of the BMIP Center, ensuring it remains a welcoming and resourceful space for the community.
Greet and assist visitors, program participants, and community members seeking information and services.
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and supply inventory within the center.
Help coordinate room reservations, community meetings, and workshops at the center.
Track and report foot traffic, program attendance, and resource distribution.
2. Community Engagement & Outreach
Serve as the primary point of contact for community members seeking information about BMIP programs and services.
Develop and maintain relationships with local residents, community groups, and stakeholders.
Table at least one event per month to promote BMIP’s services and connect with the public.
Conduct door-to-door outreach, phone calls, and in-person visits to engage with the community.
Provide educational materials and resources on Black maternal health issues.
3. Advocacy and Awareness
Organize and participate in advocacy campaigns focused on Black maternal health issues.
Facilitate community forums or listening sessions to gather feedback and identify community needs.
Help coordinate public comment sessions, petitions, and voter registration efforts related to maternal health policies.
4. Resource Connection & Direct Support
Identify and connect community members to available resources (e.g., lactation support, mental health services, housing, food assistance).
Maintain a directory of community resources relevant to Black mothers and families.
Help individuals navigate public benefits applications (e.g., Medicaid, SNAP, WIC).
5. Event Coordination
Plan and execute community events, health fairs, and workshops at the BMIP Center and off-site locations.
Manage event logistics, including securing venues, coordinating speakers, and promoting events.
Support BMIP programming by organizing and facilitating discussion groups and peer-support circles.
6. Data Collection and Reporting
Track outreach efforts, event attendance, and participant feedback.
Maintain records of services provided to assess community impact.
Assist with reporting community engagement activities to BMIP leadership.
7. Social Media & Marketing Support
Assist in sharing BMIP events and updates on social media.
Distribute flyers, newsletters, and promotional materials within the community.
Collect and share community success stories to highlight BMIP’s impact.
8. Any Other Duties
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the Executive Director as needed.
Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Comfortable with in-person outreach and direct community engagement.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
Experience with community organizing, outreach, or advocacy is a plus.
Familiarity with Black maternal health issues and BMIP’s mission is strongly preferred.
Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish, English/Haitian Creole, or English/French) are encouraged to apply but not required.
Working Conditions
This is an in-person role based at the BMIP Center with outreach efforts in the surrounding community.
Availability for some evenings and weekends to accommodate community events and engagement efforts.
