Standing in Solidarity: Supporting the AAPI Community

For immediate release

May 24, 2021

On March 16, 2021 eight people, including six Asian women, were shot and killed at massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia. Recently there has been a recurring string of racist attacks against Asian-American and AAPI communities.

The victims who died in the attack were Soon Chung Park, 74; Hyun Jung Grant, 51; Suncha Kim, 69; Yong Ae Yue, 63; Delaina Ashley Yaun, 33; Xiaojie Tan, 49; Daoyou Feng, 44; and Paul Andre Michels, 54, per the NYT.

False narratives, stereotypes, and divide-and-conquer tactics that have been used to dehumanize Asian Americans are the same used to marginalize Black, Latinx, and Indigenous Peoples. They sow seeds of mistrust that grow into weeds of antipathy toward people of color. But in this moment, as some use COVID-19 and other Xenophobic rhetoric as an excuse to engage in deplorable anti-Asian bigotry, those of us who know the pains of discrimination and exclusion must support our Asian American and Pacific Islander colleagues, friends and neighbors. Black Mothers In Power stand united with Asian and Pacific Islander communities and in opposition to those who would see us splintered by hate.

Let’s advocate for justice and against racism. Here are just a few of many ways that you can combat anti-Asian racism and support the AAPI community:

  • Check in on your AAPI loved ones and friends

  • Follow and listen to AAPI activists online

  • Get involved with grassroots efforts

  • Educate yourself on issues concerning the AAPI Community
